SKM, with BBO and Halcrow as subconsultants, were engaged by Transit New Zealand as Principal’s Advisor for the upgrade of the motorway interchange in central Auckland. The objective of the project was to improve its operational efficiency, including modifying existing structures and providing six new viaduct structures to facilitate motorway-to-motorway traffic movements not provided for by the existing motorway infrastructure. The interchange is a key element in both the national state highway network and the Auckland regional road network, with approximately 200,000 vehicles using the interchange per day. BBO played a key role in achieving the project objective of providing functionality improvements within the existing designation to meet a demanding timeframe. BBO’s role included performing control and topographical survey, stakeholder consultation, resource consent procurement, development of the specimen design for all of the civil works and 50% of the structural works and construction sequencing.
The survey was undertaken by multiple teams working at night under the highest level of safety management to mitigate the challenges of the constrained environment and high traffic volumes. BBO undertook extensive consultation with numerous stakeholder groups including local authorities, iwi, service authorities and the wider community on a scale rarely seen in this country.
SKM/BBO’s competence was recognised with a Gold Award of Excellence at the ACENZ Awards of Excellence 2005.
